How to Check Whether ChatGPT Recommends Your Business
Build a repeatable check that separates mentions, citations, and accuracy.
The direct answer
Test a defined set of relevant buyer questions, record the context and responses, and review whether your business is mentioned, cited, and described correctly. A single result is a snapshot, not proof of how all users see your company.
1. Build a question set before testing
Include category, local, comparison, problem, and evaluation questions. For a roofing company, one example is “What should I look for in a roof replacement contractor in Boise?” Avoid inserting your brand in every prompt: that tests brand familiarity more than unprompted discovery. Include a separate branded question to test factual accuracy.
2. Keep the context visible
Record the date, product or model shown, whether web search is used, location context, and exact prompt. Use fresh conversations to reduce the influence of preceding messages. If you repeat a prompt, retain all results rather than choosing the most flattering answer.
3. Separate the signals
A mention names your business. A citation links to a source. A recommendation suggests suitability. Accuracy asks whether the answer correctly describes your actual services, location, and differentiators. A business can be mentioned without being cited, or cited without being recommended.
4. Review the sources
Open sources cited in the answer and compare them with current business facts. Look for outdated service information, inconsistent profiles, missing explanation, or unsupported claims. OpenAI’s crawler documentation identifies OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler; check access policy separately from training-crawler preferences. Access is not a placement guarantee.

5. Repeat and prioritize
Repeat the question set at a defined interval. Compare sample results and keep your testing conditions consistent where possible. Correct important inaccuracies, explain missing services, and publish useful answers to unanswered questions. Never manufacture reviews or authority signals to influence a system.
